If you ever want to treat yourself with a walk back into South African
history stroll along Church Street, Tulbagh. 29 September 1969, this little town was severely damages by one of South Africa’s biggest earthquakes. Most of the buildings were badly damaged or destroyed and sadly a few people lost there lives. But over the past 45 years the town started to rebuild and restore buildings to its former glory.
Today the famous Church Street stand tall with beautiful buildings that remind us of the historical influence in South Africa. Flooded with art galleries, amazing restaurants, old trees, thatch roof homes with formidable gables. In 1699 Governor Willem van der Stel visited the valley at the foot of the Winterhoek mountains, and named it “Land van Waveren”.
